Break It Down

Hello All!

Wowzers.  I have been remiss in posting for the last semester (sorry, I did start that last blog as a draft, but didn't get it published until today.)  Though we had a little more time during second semester, I really needed it to understand and process the material.  So, in order to stay more focused, I downloaded something called "Freedom" which allows you block certain websites during your own set hours.  You can allow yourself to have a certain amount of time each day before they're blocked, then it pops up with a "Shouldn't you be working?" message.  A gentle, but firm, reminder that I'm here to learn medicine, not check Facebook. :D

Second semester flew by quickly.  It seems like it just started and we're already done with our final. K & E traveled home at the end of the last break and were in the states for the first 10 days or so of my semester.  In those 10 days I got a glimpse of what new students must feel like far from their families.  It was awful; I missed them so much and had a lot of difficulty focusing on the material because I just missed my fellas.  Luckily, they got home and things settled back into place.

I really enjoyed a lot of the classes, especially neurology and endocrinology.  I hadn't had either of these subjects before and I was hooked.  I got to go into the lab and hold a brain in my hands.  Its incredible that this brain had been in someone's skull, the source of their memories and emotions.  I felt grateful, once again, that someone had gifted their body so I could learn medicine.

Our final took place on the 15th of this month; 137 questions, one from each lecture from the semester.  You might assume that the final questions would be more broad and overarching, to test to see if we understood the concepts....while that was true for a few, from what I've heard, the professors actually submit three questions for each lecture at the beginning of the semester.  So each mini has two questions per lecture and the final gets the other one.  This means that we can be tested on minute detail on the final.  Its an excellent way to ensure that we go back over things and study intensely for the final!  All the glory be to God, I passed my final and will be starting third semester in early September.

K rocked his classes!  He had to write term papers for both and in one class, his professor wrote back that his paper was, "Indicative of the bright mind that wrote it."  The other class was a little less organized and communication wasn't the greatest, but still, K persevered and managed to get a B+.  (This is the same class that started out with 10 people, dropped to 8, and finally was down to K and one other person by the end.)  He received an A for his other class; his GPA is definitely representative of the hard work he poured into the semester.  How he manages to do it, with E, and taking care of the house is beyond me.  My husband is amazing.

E is growing up so quickly; he is standing and walking while holding onto our hands or the furniture.  He can cruise around on his hands and knees pretty quickly.  He loves the bathroom and will zoom in their to stand up and bang on the toilet lid, or nestle up the shower and grab onto his bath toys.  He will be one in the near future.  I can't believe how our little baby has transformed into a toddler.  I was looking at his newborn photos the other day and I was a tiny bit sad that he isn't so small anymore. Though more than anything, I'm thankful that he is healthy and thriving. We are planning on having a small party before school starts so our friends can come and watch him smash a cupcake!

God has been so good to us, providing for all our needs.  School has been expensive, and it is surprisingly expensive to live down here (much more so than we had thought.)  But glory to God, our bills have been paid and we are carefully budgeting for next semester.

We love you all!

For His Glory,
KCE
Eeek.

My apologies to every one who follows us here.  Its been a whirlwind these last few months.

We are now officially in our second semester here in Dominica.  K passed his classes with flying colors last semester!  I am grateful to be in my second semester of medical school.  Sometimes, it still feels unreal, a dream finally come true.

That being said, K's classes are much more intense this semester.  Every week, he has to define ten theological terms.  This might not sound like a lot, but each term has it's own full page, with citations, and there must be an outline, and a bunch of other tiny details.  His other class is on the history of the Pentecostal movement.  I love listening to him talk about it, because its something I'm interested in learning more about.

Second semester for me is a little different than first.  Our classes are divided into modules: Cardio/Respiratory 1, Gastrointestinal 1, Neuro/Psych 1, and Endocrinology 1.  We don't have lab, except for during Neuro (which is fine by me, I don't miss the smell.)  I'm excited to learn more in depth about each of these subjects!

Thank you for praying for us!

For His Glory,
KCE
